The Dunbar Forest Conservancy (DFC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the environmental conservation of this landscape, the preservation of its layered human history, and teaching others about the natural and prospecting legacy of the property.
Transparency & Accountability Standards
To ensure donor confidence, we align our public disclosures with the criteria used by major nonprofit evaluators. This ensures that every contribution is managed with rigorous administrative integrity.
Candid (GuideStar): We maintain a public profile to provide verified data for donors and grant-makers.
Charity Navigator: We host our governing policies publicly to satisfy accountability and finance standards.
BBB Wise Giving Alliance: Our operations are designed to meet the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
The Three Pillars of the DFC Mission
1. Environmental Conservation
Riparian Stewardship: We actively remove storm-deposited flotsam from the riparian corridor to protect the local ecosystem and water quality.
Access Management: We maintain 8'–10' corridors with 14' vertical clearance, ensuring the property is accessible for both educational tours and a 12' high trailer.
2. Historical Preservation
Roots of the People: We are dedicated to preserving the history of those who inhabited and worked this land, focusing on local oral histories and the physical traces they left behind.
Surface Prospecting Sites: We identify and preserve historical assay pits and surface excavations, which average 3–6 feet deep and 6–10 feet in diameter. These sites serve as evidence of the localized, non-industrial search for minerals that took place on the property.
3. Education
The Central Information Hub: Our Hub serves as a field classroom, providing forest maps, mission handouts, and safety protocols for all visitors.
Oral History Preservation: We use the property’s physical features to teach visitors about the folklore and documented prospecting efforts that define the region's human story.
